A Perfunctory Affair

A conceptual form of art involves an artist making all of their decisions and plans before beginning to execute the work. This concept is akin to a machine that creates the art itself.

In June 1967, Sol LeWitt published an article in Artforum entitled “Paragraphs on Conceptual Art.” In it, he discussed his views on the form of art. LeWitt argued that “Conceptual artists are mystics rather than rationalists. They leap to conclusions that logic cannot reach.” He went on to explain how this new form of art “is based on the fact that all art is a matter of ideas and not a matter of craftsmanship.”

Where Humanity Intersects

When Sol LeWitt, a conceptual artist, passed away in 2007 at the age of seventy-eight, he was in the midst of organizing a retrospective wall-drawing exhibition at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA).

This event was projected to be massive, as it would encompass an entire 27,000-square-foot building (Building 7) and feature wall drawings spanning LeWitt’s entire career, from 1968 to 2007.

This exhibition was planned to be a valuable scholarly resource and a major tourist attraction in the Western Massachusetts area. It was anticipated that this show would become one of the prominent art pilgrimages in the United States due to its magnitude, scope, and durability.

LeWitt desired a particular team to work on the MASS MoCA project, so in April 2008, a total of forty-six individuals – thirteen professional artists, nine apprentices, fourteen interns, and his eight closest assistants – congregated in North Adams to spend five months constructing a hundred wall drawings. I was among the professional artists.

The scope of the installation was immense, as it would take up almost an acre of wall space with a budget of around 10 million dollars.

A team of roughly fifty people worked eight-hour days, six days a week, from April to October to execute the project. A large quantity of red rosin paper was necessary to cover the floors for painting, as well as materials such as white receipt paper, brown roll paper, rulers, blue and green masking tape, paper towels, plastic sheeting, Benjamin Moore house paint, Lascaux acrylic paint, distilled water, water-soluble crayons, paintbrushes, foam core board, razor blades, Spackle, sheet plastic, paint trays and liners, paint rollers, stirring sticks and more.

In order to begin the pencil drawings, a total of 180,000 pencils of each color (red, blue, yellow and graphite) were acquired. During the project, three employees a day were allocated to the task of sharpening the pencils.

Drawing on the Wall: #343

This artistic creation has earned itself the numerical designation of 343.

I’m currently situated in the middle of a 57 foot and three quarter inch wall, which is part of a labyrinth on the second floor of Building 7.

Alongside my apprentice Julia, I am attempting to re-create Wall Drawing #343, a work of conceptual art, from a page of instructions written by LeWitt in 1980. This code-like set of instructions is a combination of both precision and enigma.

We are not the only ones to carry out these instructions; #343 and adaptations of it have been installed in galleries from Rome to Los Angeles. Some versions of the drawing are black on white, while others feature colored shapes on a white background.

The complete instructions are presented below:

Nine geometric figures, such as a right triangle, cross, and X, are painted on a black wall in individual white-filled squares.

Presently, we are utilizing water-soluble crayon pastels with the texture of frozen butter; if held for a prolonged time, they will start to melt.

We are expected to draw in arbitrary directions until our hands ache and the strata of lines appear almost impenetrable. One of LeWitt’s longest-serving aides has indicated that if we are not feeling any discomfort, we are not doing a satisfactory job.

The pain in my hands, especially my right one, fluctuates between numbness and soreness. This must be a sign that I’m doing something right, since we were told that the drawing would start to appear after two weeks of continuous doodling with multiple layers.

With time, I realized that the oldest layers of the drawing were transforming, becoming more robust and fragile all at once, even flaking off when I drew over them. What had initially been a vague set of written instructions gradually became something more tangible, a constantly evolving physical presence.

MASS MoCA is one of the few American art museums that offers tours during the installation process, considering it to be a valuable part of their postmodern worldview.

Julia and I are a part of this interactive installation, and often have visitors, such as artists Julie Mehretu, Simon Starling, Jenny Holzer, Chuck Close, Tara Donovan, Ed Burtynsky, Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo and his wife, artist Leah Singer, composer Terry Riley, many school and donor groups, and Leonard Nimoy, to contend with.

When someone inquires about our work, I explain how, although we follow specific, organized directions, LeWitt’s wall drawings are just as much “performed” as they are created according to his guidelines.

When it comes to #343, I remind people of something Anthony, LeWitt’s draftsman of almost three decades, said to me: “Keep in mind to draw, not just fill in color.” For this particular piece, the sketching starts off as an arbitrary scrawl, and then slowly develops until it looks like the texture of compressed cottage cheese, if that’s imaginable.

Comprehension is not only achieved by reading the instructions or discussing them, but rather by actively following them.

An Idea is Not Something that Can be Graphically Represented as a Line, But a Concept.

Comprehending Sol LeWitt’s work necessitates accepting that the lines used in conceptual art aren’t as significant as those used for creating one single representational art piece. With a LeWitt wall drawing, there is no original since each work can be recreated, as per his instructions.

Nevertheless, commercial aspects of the art realm mean that access to the instructions is restricted. For the show at MASS MoCA, works such as #343 are “on loan” from the owner who gave permission to execute them.

The line is a method of charting the artistic action; it is only a representation of a concept that could be expressed, for instance, as “from this place to that place”. LeWitt was partial to the idea over the execution.

To ensure I am conveying the correct idea, I have to be meticulous with the execution. Like musicians who recognize that playing a note, a chord, or a song has numerous options, but to make it sound good, training is required.

Similarly, when a six-foot-wide circle must be drawn, there are numerous methods to do it, but there is only one way that LeWitt wanted it done.

For those familiar with LeWitt’s wall drawings, they all have a common look and feel. This is because a few people have worked for LeWitt for a large portion of their lives; they know what he wanted each drawing to look like, based on his written instructions.

At the beginning of LeWitt’s career, he created the drawings himself, but as interest in them increased, he had to depend on a small group of drafters who could accurately execute his instructions, and devise methods special to each wall drawing.

Subsequently, these people trained others such as myself. (I started to work for LeWitt on his retrospective at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2000.

For the event, I was taught how to paint walls, section off drawings, cut tape properly, produce straight lines, sharpen pencil leads, try to reduce mistakes as much as possible, and complete repetitive tasks with as few errors as possible.)

For example, I am aware that when we cover up forms, a single piece of tape is necessary and this can sometimes measure up to sixty feet; additionally, we sometimes have to use large amounts of paper for the purpose of producing a straight line when the paint dries up or the scribbling is done and the paper or tape is taken away.

We are also given direction on the accurate procedure for scribbling–always in broad, arbitrary strokes, never small concentrated strokes. Small concentrated strokes can make an area too dark and too thick quickly.

If I am in a quandary, I rely on Anthony to analyze our labor. Our desired outcome is to appear almost solid from a distance but with lots of tiny, visible lines underneath when inspected closely.

Drawing on the Wall #289

Wall Drawing #289 is a work of art created by the artist Sol LeWitt. It consists of a series of straight lines crossing each other on a wall. The lines are drawn in black and white, creating a visually striking composition.

The artwork is intended to be a representation of how ideas can come together to form a larger, more complex concept. The artwork is a reflection of how different perspectives can create a holistic idea.

I begin working on another artwork by LeWitt, #289, which is called “Star Wars” and dates back to 1977. The instructions for the crayon drawing are, “Draw Lines from the four corners, four sides, and the center of a wall, all to points on a grid.”

A black wall of a rectangular shape must have a grid of 1,008 six-inch squares drawn on it with a pencil. Then, white crayon lines should emanate from the corners, midpoints, and center of the wall to points on the grid.

These lines need to be nearly perfect, but not too perfect–neither too grainy nor straight, and without forming any patterns.

The greatest challenge is deciding whether the edges of the wall should be regarded as the limits of the grid or not; a subtle yet significant difference, given that these drawings will serve as models for future installations of LeWitt’s work.

Mio is the one holding the responsibility for the drawing, and I am helping her out together with an apprentice called Jordan. A moment of concern appears when Mio notices a picture of a previous version of the drawing where a crayon line reaches the edge of the wall.

She is not sure if it was appropriate to do so or not, so she consults with the LeWitt principal team–Jo Watanabe, Sachi Cho, John Hogan, Tomas Ramberg, Takeshi Akita, and Anthony, who is the ultimate decision maker when it comes to determining if the drawing is done correctly.

The general opinion appears to be that since Mio is in control of the drawing, she is the one to decide if the wall’s edge is part of the grid. In the end, she concludes that it is.

Classifying Spock and Non-Spock

It took us a whole month to finish task #289. Not long after, Leonard Nimoy visited the museum with a group to view some of LeWitt’s wall drawings from the 1970s. My colleagues were infatuated upon meeting him, but I felt slighted.

I was sure that I was the only one of the Sol LeWitt crew who had read both of Nimoy’s autobiographical books, I Am Not Spock and the more reflective and postmodern I Am Spock.

It occurs to me that, in a similar way to LeWitt, Nimoy had a fictional character that he was associated with–Nimoy’s being Spock, who was composed and rational, and LeWitt’s being the somewhat unemotional and abstract geometric wall drawings.

All of LeWitt’s creations were based on the grid or its space, and frequently in a series.

His artwork was not inspired by his persona in the same way as the works of Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Matthew Barney, or Julian Schnabel. LeWitt, like Nimoy, is a hidden figure within an abstraction.

As I was at lunch, Nimoy and I crossed paths once more. His gaze was directed towards me as he walked out the door, and for a moment it seemed as though he was pondering whether to give me a grin. Ultimately, he made the decision to abstain.

Now and Then, Shapes of Feeling

The majority of LeWitt’s wall drawings have numerical titles which correlate to the order in which they were made.

Although geometry and numbers are essential components of his line drawings, they are anything but simple when put into practice.

The sheer number of people who must work together to complete the pieces adds a psychological intensity which can be seen upon close inspection.

The grand scale of his wall drawings is not meant to induce a certain phenomenological experience but instead is a result of his logical approach and his preference for creating variations of his works.

It’s unsurprising, then, that his wall drawings, composed of shapes and lines, don’t usually carry an emotional or sentimental message. An important exception to this is the work from 1970, entitled:

46. Evenly distributed, non-intersecting curved lines covering the wall.

The artwork appears to have been created in homage to the artist Eva Hesse, who tragically passed away due to a brain tumor in 1970 at the age of thirty-four.

It conveys a feeling of sorrow. In the same year of her death, LeWitt was responsible for the initial installation in Paris. The drawing brings to mind flowing tresses of hair, or the motion of a river and waves in the sea.

46 brings to mind a sentimental woodblock print by Edvard Munch entitled Man’s Head in Woman’s Hair.

At the end-of-installation celebration for his retrospective at SFMOMA in 2000, I had the privilege of speaking with LeWitt.

As he poured champagne, I asked him about #46 and he seemed to recognize it as something connected to Hesse, who he had met in New York in the 1960s.

When the festivities were in full swing, I asked him if he would take a photo with me and the paper cube I’d crafted (representing human intellect).

He chuckled and said that while he himself had constructed many paper cubes in the past, currently other people made them for him.

Thoreau’s Geographical Knowledgeability

Henry David Thoreau is renowned for having had a thorough understanding of geography, which is evident in his works.

This connection between Thoreau and geography has long been noted by scholars.

His writings demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the area around Concord, Massachusetts, where he lived. This includes information on the local rivers, forests, and hills.

Furthermore, he often referred to events and locations outside of Concord.

Consequently, his works have been seen as providing an excellent snapshot of the area during the mid-1800s.

On April 8, a week into our work on the MASS MoCA installation, the team gathered by the large, empty walls for a moment of silence. It had been a year since LeWitt’s passing.

Anthony stated that LeWitt wouldn’t have wanted a big deal made of the anniversary.

Nonetheless, it was his art that had united us all, so it was essential to recognize his absence. He was always gracious, frequently gifting his art to his friends and associates.

Furthermore, he helped employ many people throughout the years, and even supported other artists in their pursuits.

In November 2008, a retrospective exhibition honoring the clash between the individual and society opened its doors.

Appositely, this display will take place in Massachusetts – the same state where Henry David Thoreau’s cabin still stands at Walden Pond.

It is likely that Thoreau would have appreciated Sol LeWitt’s artwork, which is created under instructions and mirrors the minimalist lifestyle he adopted by building his own cabin, chairs, and tables.

In Walden, Thoreau made clear his intention by noting, “My house featured three chairs: One for when I desired being alone, two for when I wanted to share with a friend, and three when I was ready to mingle with society.”
