Tom Cruise’s final appearance as IMF agent Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has earned Rs 81.10 crore at the Indian box office in 13 days. The film, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, was released in Indian cinemas on May 17, 2025 – six days before its release in the United States on May 23, 2025. It is the eighth and final installment in the Mission: Impossible film series, continuing the storyline from Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, released in 2023.
According to box office tracking platform Sacnilk, the film earned Rs 1.75 crore across all Indian languages—English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu—on Day 13. The overall English occupancy on Day 13 was 13.10%, and the Hindi occupancy was 9.68%.
Before its theatrical release, The Final Reckoning premiered at the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, where it received a five-minute standing ovation. Tom Cruise and the film’s cast attended the event.
In India, the film grossed more than Rs 33 crore in its opening weekend – the early momentum helped push its total to ₹81.10 crore by Day 13. The movie was released in four languages across India—English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
The cast includes Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, Angela Bassett, and Esai Morales. Angela Bassett plays U.S. President Erika Sloane. Hayley Atwell plays Grace, a fellow agent, and Esai Morales plays Gabriel, the main antagonist.
At the center of The Final Reckoning is a digital enemy, unlike anything Ethan Hunt has faced before. A self-aware AI known as the Entity has slipped into global systems, posing a threat that no government can control. Hunt’s mission: recover the key to disabling it before it spreads beyond reach.
The search eventually leads to the wreckage of a Russian submarine in the North Pacific, where the AI’s source code was originally sealed. From there, the story spans continents, as Hunt and his team race to stop Gabriel—a relentless operative working to secure the Entity’s future.
By the time the action hits South Africa, the film’s final act is in full swing. There’s a countdown to detonation, a last-minute infiltration of a fortified bunker, and a midair battle that pushes Cruise’s stuntwork to its limit—parachute mishap and all.
At the New York premiere of The Final Reckoning, Tom Cruise confirmed that this film is his last in the Mission: Impossible series. According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, when Cruise was asked if there was any chance he might return as Ethan Hunt, he said: “It’s the final! It’s not called ‘final’ for nothing.”
Cruise also posted on social media to reflect on his career with the franchise. He shared a behind-the-scenes photo from the first Mission: Impossible film, which marked his debut as a producer.
His message read: “Over 30 years ago, I began the journey of producing my first film, Mission: Impossible. Since then, these eight films have taken me on the adventure of a lifetime.
To the incredible directors, actors, artists, and crews across the globe that have helped bring these stories to life, I thank you. It has been a privilege to work alongside you all.
Most importantly, I want to thank the audience, for whom it is our great pleasure to create these films, and for whom we all serve. We’re thrilled to share The Final Reckoning with you.”
Following the film’s strong performance over the Memorial Day weekend in the U.S., Cruise posted another message on X (formerly Twitter).
He wrote: “This weekend was one for the history books! Congratulations and thank you to every filmmaker, every artist, every crew member, and every single person who works at the studios.
To every theatre and every employee who helps bring these stories to the audiences, thank you.
To everyone that works at Paramount Pictures and Skydance, thank you for your many years of partnership and unwavering support.
And most of all, THANK YOU to the audiences everywhere—for whom we all serve and for whom we all LOVE to entertain.”
The Final Reckoning keeps the main elements of the Mission: Impossible series—espionage, high-risk action, and global danger—while closing character arcs. The film includes both solo and group scenes featuring Cruise, Atwell, Rhames, Pegg, and Morales, all moving the story forward.
The romantic subplot between Hunt and Grace is new for the series and adds another dimension to Hunt’s character. The scenes are not comedic but are written to show emotional development.
The story’s main theme is the threat posed by artificial intelligence. All major plot locations—North Pacific Ocean (Russian submarine), South Africa (AI base), and the United States (Presidential communication)—are grounded in geopolitical realism.
