Five Years Later, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake Is Still Alive

Ubisoft officially announced Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake in September 2020. At the time, the company scheduled the game’s release for January 2021. The title is a remake of the critically acclaimed 2003 action-adventure game Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. This original game was released before Ubisoft launched the Assassin’s Creed franchise. It was known for its third-person action, platforming elements, and the ability for players to control time.

Following the announcement in 2020, Ubisoft released a trailer for the remake. The trailer was met with widespread criticism for its visuals. In response, Ubisoft postponed the game’s release from January 2021 to March 2021. However, in February 2021, Ubisoft delayed the game again, and this time it did not provide a new release date.

Key Takeaways
  • Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is still in development and now has a tentative release window of 2026.
  • Ubisoft rebooted the project in 2022 and moved development from Ubisoft Pune and Mumbai to Ubisoft Montreal.
  • Ubisoft confirmed the game's status in a June 16, 2025, update after over a year of silence and no appearance at Summer Game Fest 2025.

Development Was Rebooted in 2022 and Moved to Ubisoft Montreal

Initially, the remake was being developed by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, both located in India. After repeated delays and continued criticism, Ubisoft decided to change direction. In 2022, the development was officially rebooted. The project was then transferred to Ubisoft Montreal, the studio responsible for creating the original Sands of Time game in 2003.

Since that reboot, Ubisoft Montreal has been in charge of the game’s development. According to the most recent updates, the remake now has a tentative release window set for 2026.

June 2025 Social Media Post Confirms Project Is Ongoing

On June 16, 2025, Ubisoft posted a message on the official Prince of Persia account on X. The message stated that the team is “still deep in the game — exploring, building, and ensuring the sands move with purpose.”  It also said, “This game is being crafted by a team that truly cares, and they’re pouring their hearts (and a lot of coffee) into every step. Thank you for sticking with us.”

Ubisoft thanked fans directly in the message: “Thank you for sticking with us.” The post included a piece of concept art from the game, showing a large glass structure set against a pink sky.

This June 2025 post was the first public acknowledgment from Ubisoft in more than a year regarding the project’s status. It came after the game was absent from the Summer Game Fest 2025, a major gaming event. The lack of any update during the event had led to renewed questions about whether the game was still in development.

Ubisoft Montreal Aiming for 2026 Release

Although Ubisoft has not announced a specific release date, the company confirmed earlier this year that Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is planned to launch sometime during Fiscal Year 2025. This was stated during Ubisoft’s earnings call. Fiscal Year 2025 ends in March 2026, meaning the game’s release window extends into that timeframe.

The development team has not shared new gameplay footage or a revised trailer since the initial reveal. The only recent content shared was the artwork included in the June 16, 2025, social media post.

Ubisoft’s Other Changes and Franchise Activity

In addition to the remake, Ubisoft has continued to support the Prince of Persia brand through other releases. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown was recently launched on Android and iOS. This mobile game supports external controllers and runs at 60 frames per second on newer mobile devices.

Ubisoft also referenced The Rogue Prince of Persia, a series spin-off developed by Evil Empire, the studio behind Dead Cells. This game is expected to exit early access in August 2025.

Separately, Ubisoft has made structural changes to how it manages its intellectual properties. Earlier this year, the company launched a new subsidiary focused on three franchises: Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry.

Ubisoft stated that this change would allow the company itself to focus on developing and supporting its iconic franchises. No specific mention was made about how this change would directly affect Prince of Persia, but the franchise was referenced among those Ubisoft plans to nurture.

Ubisoft Responds to Long Development Timeline

It has now been five years since Ubisoft originally announced the remake in 2020. Since then, the project has experienced multiple delays, a major development studio shift, and a complete internal reboot. Despite these issues, Ubisoft has not canceled the game and continues to confirm its development status through both official statements and social media posts.

According to the most recent message from the development team, they are actively working on the game and remain committed to delivering a product that meets expectations. No further details, including gameplay updates or story revisions, have been released.

As of June 2025, the confirmed facts are that Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is still in production at Ubisoft Montreal, is planned to be released by 2026, and remains a project the company intends to complete.
