The Process: Morehshin Allahyari, She Who Sees the Unknown: Kabous, The Right Witness and The Left Witness, 2019

Morehshin Allahyari, an Iranian artist, has devoted her long-term art project, She Who Sees the Unknown, to reviving stories of female/queer djinn in Islamic culture that have been neglected or forgotten.

Since October 2016, Allahyari has gathered documents and images from libraries in New York and Tehran, as well as consulted with scholars worldwide, in order to construct a new narrative of the past. She terms this process “refiguring.”

She Who Sees the Unknown has been showcased in many venues, including the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. This project is composed of five distinct, multimedia experiences that use individual technologies and centre on distinct djinns.

Each djinn has a name that serves as the title for its installation. Examples include Huma (حوما), which is responsible for heat and fever in humans; Ya’jooj Ma’jooj (یاجوج‭ ‬ماجوج), the djinn of chaos and mischief; and Aisha Qandisha (عيشة‭ ‬قنديشة), the “opener” and the djinn of rivers.

Before I viewed the piece entitled Kabous, The Right Witness and The Left Witness, my favourite piece was Laughing Snake (مار‭ ‬قهقهه) which can be experienced through a hypertext narrative on Whitney’s online exhibition space, Artport.

The last piece in the series is Kabous, The Right Witness and The Left Witness. Kabous is an influential spirit of sleep paralysis and nightmares.

The Shed in Hudson Yards, in New York City, provided Allahyari with a commission for this installation as part of Manual Override, a showcase of five artists who use cutting-edge technology. The wait to view the installation was two hours both times I encountered it.

Ahlam Allahyari has been commissioned by the Whitney and New Museum, and has been a resident at Pioneer Works and Eyebeam. She was also honoured by Foreign Policy magazine in 2016, being named one of their Leading Global Thinkers.

_At her studio in Industry City, Brooklyn, we spoke about Kabous, The Right Witness and The Left Witness, as well as the process of creating a long-term art project based on research.

Her Kabous re-imagining draws on ideas of kinship, Donna Haraway’s work as a scholar of science and technology, and the concept of birth justice across generations. As we talked, we also explored the politics of compensation, quiet activism, and the feeling Allahyari had when she was able to pay off her mother’s car loan. _

QUESTION: What would you say is the virtual reality experience of Kabous?

ANSWER: Definitely. You are initially placed in a dark room, which is a duplication of my bedroom in Tehran. Overhead, two djinn figures–the Right Witness and the Left Witness–are visible; they are the ones commonly seen with a djinn referred to as Kabous. However, Kabous is not visible.

The guide instructs you to lie on your bed and gives you the virtual reality headset. After putting it on, you enter a black space in the VR. You then witness the eyes of Kabous, a figure made of smokeless fire who causes nightmares and sleep paralysis.

As you are informed of her identity, her eyes start to vanish and the Hashti, a gateway to a hammam where djinns appear, is revealed. You see, through the VR goggles, a creature comes and rests on your chest, evoking sleep paralysis.

As you continue to make your way through the hammam, you hear my mother’s voice as she reads from her diary. During the Iran-Iraq War, she was expecting my sister, and she contemplated if it was right to bring a human into the world without consulting them.

My mom vowed to give them a good life and expressed her hope that her offspring would not consider her decision to be a harsh one.

The Left Witness and the Right Witness, both with Kabous, come back. From day to night, I relate a tale of my grandmother, who while in a hammam notices a figure. Initially, she believes it to be a person, yet later recognizes it as a djinn due to its hooves; an attribute that humans do not possess.

On the same evening Iraq launched its attack on my mother’s hometown, she was again reading from her diary. Weary of warfare, her mood was bleak and dismal. My mother was praying that her offspring would never have to experience days like these.

As you progress through the hammam, the ground appears like a pool of blood beneath you. When you turn your head to the left, you can hear the faint melodies of women’s voices, yet when you rotate your head back to the right, the singing is no longer audible.

Abruptly, you are turned upside down and the sensation of flight becomes reality.

At this moment, I am addressing each of the djinn, and I am asking the Right Witness to listen to my story. My mom worked as a flight attendant at Iran Air for 28 years.

Unfortunately, due to US sanctions, it was challenging to find replacement parts to repair the aircrafts, leading to technical issues and plane crashes. I still remember my sister and I standing in the kitchen, near the window, waiting for our mother to come back.

I explain to the Left Witness about the occurrence of mothers producing monstrous offspring. I’m considering the deep-rooted trauma caused by warfare and the inherited memories and genes.

To finish, Iphone Kabous. I refer to her as “the monstrous daughter.”

At the conclusion of the movie, a strange, hybrid voice of a djinn, adult, and child emanates. This sound is edited to create a unique combination of all three. The audio begins with:

Nursing my mother

our grandmothers

our grandmothe’s grandmothers

our grandmothe’s grandmothe’s grandmothers

to transform

and amend our progeny

our granddaughters

our granddaughter’s granddaughters

our granddaughter’s granddaughter’s granddaughters

I’m referring to the concept of healing our ancestors to transform the idea of childbirth for our daughters, which I call birth justice. This involves who, when and where you give birth, as well as the what, or the things that can be birthed.

Right now, you find yourself in a place that is both dreamlike and dizzying. Although you are still in the hammam, you are experiencing it differently. You are left with the realisation that the future is the only time when you will be truly aware.

QUESTION: Alright, there’s a lot to consider. Let’s return to the final scene in a bit. Before that, I’d like to discuss the process of devising an extensive art project based on extensive research.

The research files I have seen look like they belong in a crime scene investigation. You have previously mentioned that your methodology of working is akin to that of Agent Cooper in Twin Peaks.

ANSWER: Yeah. That’s why I’ve used “artist/private investigator” in my Instagram and Twitter bios – it’s how I feel when I’m creating art or working on projects.

Gathering information about forgotten stories is difficult due to the difficulty of locating the existing material. While some aspects of Kabous are relatively familiar, Ya’jooj Ma’jooj, Aisha Qandisha, and the Laughing Snake are not as widely known.

The existing material is scattered and unorganised, and many of its locations have been forgotten. It is also not available in digital formats. To collect research material, I was sending my relatives and mother to libraries and bookstores in Iran, and also asking friends for help.

I also conducted fieldwork at the Morgan Library and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

QUESTION: Examining the tales, my thoughts always gravitate towards you. You have become the benchmark.

ANSWER: So, what I said was that my archives would be published when the She Who Sees the Unknown series was finished. It contains not only the stories but also my research.

An example of this is Kabous, in which I looked into the scientific phenomenon of sleep paralysis and how it is connected to trauma and stress. I conducted a lot of research and read the works of Dr. Baland Jalal, an authority on sleep paralysis, and we had some emails back and forth.

I also studied sleep paralysis in refugee camps and studied the comparison between people in Denmark and those in Turkey.

I have encountered sleep paralysis twice and it is truly frightening. It is distinct from nightmares, as in nightmares one’s body is active, whereas in sleep paralysis your brain is conscious, yet your body is paralyzed.

This is a peculiar association between one’s mind and body. I am unsure if you have ever experienced this.

QUESTION: Astonishing. I hadn’t. Was that what enticed you to pick Kabous as the concluding character in the set? How did you progress from all this unrefined data to a finished piece of art?

ANSWER: When I was asked by Nora Khan, the curator of the Manual Override exhibition, to be part of the show at the Shed, I was still trying to determine the last figure.

In my research, I had come across illustrations related to sleep paralysis and I remembered Kabous as one that I wanted to include. It had been one of the figures that kept coming back to me.

Exploring Kabous was something I was curious about, so I started to look at what it entailed: feeling numb and feeling incapacitated. That’s usually how it begins, sensing there is room to delve deeper, and I started to collect what I saw in the folders.

Afterwards, I compiled all of my ideas into a Google Doc. This document contains links and sections I copy-and-pasted from related articles. My thoughts were chaotic at this stage, which I view as the brainstorming phase.

Afterwards, the written components began to be produced. As part of this step, I shared my mother’s diary which she had recorded on her phone and sent to me through WhatsApp.

It was quite a task for me and my partner, Prince Harvey, who is the sound designer for this project, as we had to do a lot of editing.

I created the first few scenes and then Pariah Interactive’s Prashast Thapan and I worked together to generate the VR coding. I would bring my sketches to his studio and then I would have to read all the lines out loud, since there was no sound yet.

At the time of creating the code, I was writing the subsequent scene and we were two months away from the exhibition. We were lacking the sound composition, which is a vital element of an immersive virtual environment.

If you view the work without the musical arrangement, it’s completely different.

QUESTION: Could you tell me more about how your work is typically done in a cooperative manner?

ANSWER: Despite the intensity, the experience is incredible. As I’m creating a piece, there are definitely times when I think to myself, “This is just not working”. Suddenly, the entire project appears foolish.

This particular circle of my female acquaintances are aware of me and I rely on them. Emily Martinez and Sally Glass were particularly invested in the project. I’m normally a nuisance to them, asking for conversations about the task. But that also has its benefits. I want to present a text.

I asked my friend Emily if she thought people would hate me for creating something I had been working on, as I was scared of not getting the approval of white mom feminists.

As there are different challenges and experiences those of different races and cultural backgrounds may face, including the choice to give birth, Emily said that if anyone was to be offended by it, I should not worry, as it is not for them or about them.

She assured me that the rest of us would benefit from this and thanked me for my contribution.

Her experience working with artificial intelligence and researching intergenerational trauma made me sure that she had the capabilities to help me achieve my project.

I was discussing intergenerational trauma with Emily on the phone when I said, “How do you bring justice to this experience? It’s like birth justice,” and she responded with, “Yeah, birth justice. That’s what it is.”

This prompted me to research further and I found that birth justice is having the autonomy to decide who, where and when to give birth.

QUESTION: You included “what.”

ANSWER: Absolutely. To consider the various options of childbirth.

I was quite uncertain about the last scene. What message was this peculiar child conveying? I wasn’t aware that it would conclude in that manner until the work was accomplished.

QUESTION: In the final scene, you utter the phrase, “Only in the future, you will comprehend the only future you will understand, you will be aware of.” What is this knowledge that plays an integral role in the work?

The collection of works is labelled She Who Sees the Unknown due to the djinn’s premonition of the future.

It is conceivable that bringing forth a child will one day take on different forms, just as Octavia Butler’s “Bloodchild” portrays, with a human and a being from another world uniting and the male parent giving birth to a non-human creature.

Butler’s musings on different species, family ties and surrogacy all point to a future where we can find varied ways of caring for each other and expressing love.

QUESTION: What was the experience of working on a project with your mother’s journal like? Did your perception of her past evolve while you were involved in the endeavour?

ANSWER: Since I was sixteen or seventeen, I have had the opportunity to read her journal, which is about fifty or sixty pages long. As I get to the end, she is writing less and less until she eventually stops.

When my mom was pregnant with my sister, she was 28 and it was the second year of the war. No one knew how long it would last, and it was extended to 8 years. During this time, there was a much larger number of babies being born in Iran.

I often teased my parents, as well as others, for having children during a war. I recall my mom saying that it was their only hope.

I have found my view of birthing very complex. How does one make decisions when considering the immense challenges of climate change and the revival of fascism in many nations?

I’ve spoken with women from regions such as the Middle East, Iran, Africa, who have endured war or enslavement. It can be much more difficult to make choices when people have gone through those kinds of traumas.

QUESTION: From the contents of her diary, a query was posed: “Is it really fair that a human would bring a child into existence without their prior consent?” She then ponders if you would blame her for it one day.

It’s a very moving thought. How do these reflections match up with your current notions on birth justice?

ANSWER: I’m discussing a more advanced version. When contemplating birth justice, she’s anxious her decision might be incorrect. What she’s really fearful of is the uncertainty that comes with the fact that we are in a conflict.

The project opened my eyes to the great differences between my mother in 1982 and me in 2019. My parents gave me the chance to be unconventional, something my mother was not allowed to do.

It enabled me to comprehend how desperate she was when she moved to the town of Qorveh in Kurdistan. She had no friends and did not speak the language. Her journal stresses her feeling of isolation, and she even wonders if giving birth was the right decision. It was meaningful to me that she even contemplated it.

I experience feelings of vulnerability in various ways. I ask myself, “If I have not resolved my own issues, how can I give life to another person?” This query is something which lots of people around me ponder.

It is especially true for immigrants, who do not have the same support structures as those who were born and raised in the same location.

An Iranian person whose relatives are in Iran cannot be visited by them in the US due to the travel ban. The sanctions produce economic instability, plus the individual is dealing with having their identity rejected and blocked.

It is not easy to make it alone in life, and if one chooses to bring a new life into the world, they must find a way to support that life as well. Having the opportunity to become a parent is a privilege, and this is just one part of that.

It’s difficult for me to express, since I hold motherhood in high regard. I’m fond of kids, especially my friends’, yet I am troubled by the kind of life a child of mine would lead in this day and age.

My reluctance to bring a child into the world is in part due to a desire to shield them from harm. I never told my mom, but as a youngster I wished for safety at times.

When I was younger, my mother would often tell me, “Wait until you’re in your thirties, then you’ll really understand.” However, I still have difficulty with this concept. I am more attracted to the idea of family and adoption.

Instead of following the traditional route of being a woman, I’m curious about what other options there could be.

QUESTION: Could you provide any guidance to other creators on how to organise a difficult research-oriented creative work?

ANSWER: Structure is always the starting point in my work, but I also go into it with a great amount of uncertainty. Donna Haraway talks about embracing the unknown[2], and I often think about this concept.

To me, it means trusting the process and being comfortable with the idea that I don’t know how it will turn out. This can be challenging for younger people, who can be overwhelmed by the idea that they have no idea what the project will become.

I was really perplexed about the final sequence. What is this strange child attempting to convey? How am I going to formulate that?

Many times I find myself in my own head–I might be in a room writing, heading to a studio, or working with someone on a virtual reality project. I don’t often take the time to discuss my ideas with them.

This is why my second bit of advice is to voice your projects. Rather than giving public talks or booking studio visits, connect with people who are familiar with you and your work. This way, you can have a deep conversation about your project.

For example, I had a friend with similar interests and I was able to call her and explain my piece to her.

QUESTION: This is reminiscent of the conversation we had when I arrived, concerning the hammam being a place of solace and companionship for women–where your grandmother used to meet with her female friends and discuss important matters.

ANSWER: In my mind, the same sort of hammam area in which I envision my grandmother, mom, and I as the daughter is also similar to the space of my current female friendships. This is the place where I can think of the tale of the monstrous daughter being shared.

QUESTION: Could you explain the process of receiving a commission from the Shed and collaborating to make this work?

ANSWER: I was granted twenty thousand dollars – the largest sum of funding I had ever received – to make a work of art. My intention was to use it to pay people, particularly those of colour and those in Iran.

Not only did I spend it on 3-D printing the sculptures (which can be expensive), but I was also able to pay the singers in Iran in U.S. dollars – which was a great way to spread the money from a politically controversial place.

This was regarding the incident with The Shed, which had an individual on its board who was a large contributor to the Trump campaign.[3]

Affirmative: Absolutely.

ANSWER: A handful of journalists contacted me for remarks, but I didn’t respond. I chatted with some people who argued that opting out was the only way to demonstrate disapproval of the situation.

I’ve made a few posts about this on Twitter; I really don’t like this idea that activism only includes demonstrating or boycotting. I’ve turned down a great deal of things I disagree with or that I don’t agree with politically.

For me, firstly: This is the first instance, in my entire artistic career, that I have had the opportunity to gain access to a sum of money (albeit not an exorbitant amount) to create a piece of art for an exhibition.

Secondly, I am going to use half of the money to compensate the various people of colour who have been involved in the project. This compensation is especially important for artists from Iran, as it can have a real effect on their livelihoods in the face of sanctions.

Though some journalists are asking me to return the money, I would rather be proactive and use the same funds to have a purposeful impact.

The result was positive because he exited the board.

It really annoys me when some people believe the only way to activism is being loud and boisterous. Taking to the streets to demonstrate against a war is a legitimate form of activism, yet it is not the only option.

I strongly believe that silent activism can be crucial, and can actually help bring about real change in people’s lives.

QUESTION: Are there any other types of subtle activism? It is understandable that people wouldn’t all request transformation in identical means.

I’ve been ruminating a lot on the idea of paying people in Iran who are impacted by the sanctions. It’s Trump, who the board member backs, who is responsible for creating these sanctions, which have caused the dollar-to-toman exchange to become more expensive in Iran.

For someone living in a small community in Iran, this money can be used to improve their lives, rather than me gaining twenty articles in Artnews saying, “This artist withdrew.”

I refused to reply to any of the journalists’ emails since I didn’t wish my resolution to be affected by persons desiring clicks on the piece of writing. If I declined the offer, who would be the beneficiary of the money?

Possibly someone who has no thought or interest in how they use it? The money wouldn’t go to the same places I would have preferred it to.

As a young person of colour and an activist, people have the expectation that I will be on the front line of any situation. This project of mine has a lot to do with my mother. I told her, “Let me use some of this to pay off your car loan.”

She was surprised, but things have become tough for her financially due to the sanctions and her savings are no longer of any use. She is still working, but this extra support would be beneficial.

She’s amazingly adorable. Just recently, she sent me a text along with a picture of her car loan being paid off. Regrettably, the income she had accrued from her twenty-eight years of labour in Iran is now worthless due to the imposed sanctions.

This makes it incredibly difficult for her to have a stable life. Consequently, I’ve been reflecting on this issue frequently and plan to write about it someday.

The traditional and private area of women in Persia is a bathhouse.

Donna Haraway, citing James Clifford, has taught me that we require stories (and theories) that are expansive enough to encompass the complexities of a situation while still preserving the possibility of novel and existing affiliations.

The Related Companies, a real estate developer responsible for Hudson Yards, the location of the Shed, saw Stephen Ross, its chairman, host a multimillion-dollar fundraiser for the reelection campaign of President Trump at his Southampton, New York residence.

Close to the beginning of the exhibition, Ross stepped down from the board of the Shed.

It is possible to lessen the risk of plagiarism by altering the structure of the text without disrupting the intended meaning. This can be done by preserving the original concept but rewriting it in different words, phrases, and sentences. Furthermore, the original formatting should be kept intact.

An alternative way of expressing the same idea is to say that there is an absence of plagiarism when the structure of the text has been altered while maintaining the original context and meaning. Keeping the same markdown formatting is essential to preserving the originality of the text.
