Alain Mabanckou is a novelist, journalist, poet, and academic, a French citizen born in the Republic of the Congo, he is currently a Professor of Literature at UCLA. His latest novel, Petit Piment, which was shortlisted for the Prix Goncourt. Its English translation as Black Moses, by Helen Stevenson, was longlisted for the 2017 Man Booker International prize.
