A finalist for the National Book Critics Circle award and the New York Public Library Young Lions award, he is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in General Nonfiction, the Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers award in Nonfiction, the Graywolf Prize in Nonfiction, the Annie Dillard prize in Creative Nonfiction, and a John C Zacharis prize from Ploughshares.
