Proton Introduces Encrypted Password Manager, Proton Pass

Proton, the company behind the popular encrypted email service, has launched a new password manager called Proton Pass, which features end-to-end encryption and other enhanced security features.

Proton claims it cannot decrypt the data, even if a third party requests it. This “zero knowledge” security model is also used by other popular password managers, such as 1Password and LastPass.

Aside from Proton Pass, the company has announced several new features in recent months. These include:

  • Allowing non-ProtonMail users to sign up for Proton Drive, enabling users with third-party email services like Gmail and Yahoo to access the company’s cloud storage feature.
  • Launching a VPN browser extension that provides similar protection to its full VPN service, but only encrypts the browser’s HTTP connection.
  • Introducing a “kill switch” feature for its VPN, which blocks all outgoing and incoming connections outside of the VPN service and prevents the device from connecting to the internet when the app is not active.
