When Food Delivery Goes Wrong: A Michigan Family’s Grubhub Nightmare

Have you ever let your child use your phone to play a game, only to find out they’ve gone on a spending spree?

Well, that’s exactly what happened to Keith Stonehouse from Michigan, when his 6-year-old son, Mason, ordered over $1,000 worth of food from Grubhub!

Keith claims that he was by himself with Mason when the young boy took it upon himself to order a lavish meal from multiple eateries using his father’s Grubhub account, while his wife was out watching a movie.

From jumbo shrimp to salads, shawarma, chicken pita sandwiches, chili cheese fries, and more, Mason certainly had a virtual smorgasbord to choose from.

The food started to pile up quickly at their home in Chesterfield Township, with one Grubhub driver after another delivering unexpected orders to their doorstep. It wasn’t until a few deliveries later that Keith realized what was happening, by which point, it was too late to stop the orders from coming.

However, his son’s $183 order of jumbo shrimp from the same restaurant was delivered to their house, which was quite surprising.

Keith mentioned that his son placed orders for food from multiple restaurants, leading to a fraud alert from Chase Bank when a $439 order from Happy’s Pizza was declined. However, his son’s $183 order of jumbo shrimp from the same restaurant was delivered to their house, which was quite surprising.

Understandably, Keith wasn’t finding the situation very funny, but he could see the humor in it all the same. He even compared the experience to something out of a ‘Saturday Night Live’ skit!

However, it seems that Grubhub is taking the matter quite seriously.

The family was contacted by the company and offered a gift card worth $1,000 to pay for the food expenses.  They are also considering using the family in an online promotional campaign. Now, that would be quite the story to tell!

Kristin Stonehouse, Mason’s mother, said that her son is an extremely intelligent child who has been reading since he was just 2 1/2 years old. Even the mother acknowledged that what happened was like taking something that wasn’t theirs.

So, on Sunday morning, she and her spouse spoke with Mason to make sure he understood how wrong it was. They even took out the money he received for his birthday, which was $115, from his piggy bank and kept it.

They told him that the cash would be used to restore the money they had spent from their accounts. But Mason didn’t seem too bothered and simply picked up a penny from the floor, saying he could start all over again!

Keith suggests that parents should ensure that their children cannot access important apps easily when they are using their phones. And of course, he’s changing his password! Although he has heard of similar things happening to other parents, he never expected it to happen to him.

In the end, Keith said most of the food went into their refrigerators, and they even invited some neighbors over to help eat some of it. It makes for quite an entertaining story to tell, but it’s probably not a situation they’d want to find themselves in again anytime soon!
