Maike Cruse’s Inaugural Art Basel: A Global Art Celebration

Art Basel 2024 is set to welcome 287 galleries from 40 countries, with 22 making their debut.

The prestigious art fair will be held from June 13 to 16, with preview days on June 11 and 12.

This year’s event marks the first under the leadership of Maike Cruse, who was appointed as the inaugural director in May 2023.

Expanded Citywide Programming

Stefanie Hessler, director of the Swiss Institute in New York, will curate the Parcours section, expanding into storefronts along Basel’s Clarastrasse and the Hotel Merian.

The venue will be a continuous, around-the-clock space for artistic events and showcases.

The Film section, curated by writer and curator Filipa Ramos, will be held at Basel’s Stadtkino.

Writer and editor Kimberly Bradley will take charge of the Conversations program, which is free to the public and hosted at the city fairgrounds.

Main Section Highlights

245 exhibitors will feature in the main section, including new participants like LA- and New York-based Karma, Taipei’s Tina Keng Gallery, and Shanghai’s Madeln Gallery.

Graduates from the Feature and Statements sections, such as Commonwealth and Council from Mexico City, LA, and Paris’s Galerie Crèvecœur, will also appear in the main section.

Feature and Statements Sections

The Feature section will welcome 11 new participants and present 16 art-historical exhibitions.

Highlights include Galerie Mueller’s “condensed” retrospective of Jean Tinguely and Shanghai’s Bank’s showcase of the partnership between Maryn Varbanov and Song Huai-Kuei.

The Statements section will offer eighteen solo presentations, including a sonic installation by Indonesian artist Julian Abraham “Togar,” presented by Jakarta’s ROH Projects, and a group of sculptures by Sudanese artist Ahmed Umar exhibited by Oslo’s OSL contemporary.

Baloise Art Prize

The 25th Baloise Art Prize, valued at CHF 30,000 (about $34,000), will be awarded to up to two artists in the Statements section.

The Baloise Group, a Swiss insurance company, will also purchase works by the winning artists and donate them to European museums, which will host solo exhibitions for the winners.

Citywide Exhibitions

In addition to the fair, several shows will be held at museums throughout Basel, including the Fondation Beyeler, Kunstmuseum Basel, Kunsthaus Baselland, Museum Tinguely, and Vitra Schaudepot.
